KSDB The Wildcat 91.9 FM |
K-State Collegian Newspaper |
I had heard that The Wildcat 91.9 FM college radio station was in need of some DJs right before the beginning of my junior year at K-State. After thinking about how much fun it would be to control my own show and play the music I wanted over the air waves, I thought I would sign up and give it a shot.
My best friend and I went on to having weekly 2 hour speciality Rock Shows for the next two semesters.
After that his schedual became too busy so I took on an Indie Punk show by myself for a semester.
Now that this semester is coming to an end I am planning an Electronic Dubstep Show for this upcoming semester.
Due to my love of Celtic and Irish music, I have been asked to put together an all day Saint Patty's Day Show that will play on Saint Patty's Day as well as the famous "Fake Patty's Day" that's popular in Aggieville near K-State campus.
Over the Christmas break during my junior year I was informed by the Station Manager that the current Web Director was going to be graduating and that she was looking for a replacement for the position. I jumped on the oppourtunity to show them what I was capable of doing.
I spend the rest of my break doing research on web design learning as much as i could about HTML and CSS so that I would be prepared for my position in the spring semester.
During the spring semester I won a Kansas Association of Broadcasters Award for the website design.
My job duties increased for my senior year when my manager also made me the Design, and Social Media Director as well. I am now in charge of all Social Media accounts and updating the world on what's happening at our station, as well as being on hand for poster, and advertisment designs.
Nearing the end of my spring semester of my junior year I recieved a call from The Marketing Chief at a company called Fort Riley Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (Fort Riley DFMWR). They had received my email looking for an internship and were wanting an interview.
After interviewing me and looking at my portfolio the senior and junior designers thought I would be the best fit for the position amungst all the students who were called in for interviews.
For the entire summer I worked 40 hour weeks and made several design packages, logo and branding campaigns, as well as guide books layout and designs.
Besides getting a taste for the design aspect, I got a chance to work some of the events that DFMWR sponsered which gave me the chance to get out of the office and meet other people on base and see who all makes up Fort Riley. This help drastically in designing flyers and posters for certain demographics.
